How many porta potties does a festival need?

A festival needs units by crowd and hours from the PSAI special-events chart. A 1,000-person, 6-hour event needs 9 units; 2,000 people for 6 hours need 16; 5,000 people for 8 hours need 50. These numbers assume no pumping during the event, so a mid-event service can cover part of the load.

Worked example: two-day craft fair

2,000 visitors Saturday and 1,000 Sunday, 6 hours each. Saturday needs 16 units from the chart. Instead of renting 16 and 9 separately, rent 16 for the weekend and book an overnight Saturday service so Sunday starts clean. 16 toilets need 2 handwashing stations; 5% accessible = 1 accessible unit.

What permits cover festival restrooms in Galveston?

Festivals on City of Galveston property need a special event permit, filed 75–180 days before the event, with a $1,000 refundable cleanup deposit. The city's guidelines recommend at least 1 chemical toilet per 250 people. Park Board beach events over 500 people plan 1 toilet per 500 attendees, 1 in 4 accessible.

City minimums are lower than PSAI-based planning. We plan to PSAI so lines stay short. Confirm requirements with the permit office; this isn't legal advice.

How do you lay out restrooms at a large event?

We lay out festival restrooms in clusters near entrances, food courts, and stages, with at least one accessible unit and a handwashing station in every cluster. Each cluster sits where a service truck can reach it overnight. We send a drawn layout you can attach to your permit application.

  1. You send the site map and expected attendance by day.
  2. We place clusters: gates, food, stage, beer garden.
  3. Each cluster gets ≥5% accessible units and PSAI handwashing ratio.
  4. We mark truck routes for overnight service.
  5. You get a layout PDF for the city or Park Board file.
From our call log

A 40-year-running sheepdog-and-fiber festival called for 12 units and 3 sinks for up to 2,000 people. Our planner asked about accessible units — the organizer hadn't listed any. We added 1 accessible unit and a Saturday-night clean so Sunday visitors walked into fresh units.

Which Galveston events book portable restrooms?

Galveston's biggest restroom demand comes from Mardi Gras (February–March), the Lone Star Rally (November 5–8, 2026), Dickens on The Strand (December), the Shrimp Festival (September), and the county fair in Hitchcock (April). Units for those weekends sell out weeks early, so organizers should reserve as soon as permits are filed.

  • Mardi Gras! Galveston — Feb/Mar
  • FeatherFest — Apr
  • Galveston County Fair & Rodeo (Hitchcock) — Apr
  • Shrimp Festival — Sep
  • ARToberFEST & Oktoberfest — Oct
  • Lone Star Rally — Nov 5–8, 2026
  • Dickens on The Strand — Dec

From real customer calls

Questions renters ask us before booking

These questions come straight from real rental calls. Each answer starts with the short version, then the conditions that change it.

How many porta potties does a 2,000-person festival need?

A 2,000-person festival needs 12 units for 4 hours and 16 units for 6 hours, from the PSAI special-events chart. Make at least 1 accessible, add 2 handwashing stations, and add an overnight service between festival days.

Do I need an ADA unit for my event?

For public events, plan on at least 5% of units in each cluster being accessible, and never fewer than one. That's how the ADA portable-unit rule is usually applied. Private parties only need one if a guest uses a wheelchair or walker. Confirm event rules with your permit office or venue.

How many handwashing stations do I need?

Use 1 handwashing station for every 1–10 toilets, 2 for 11–20, 3 for 21–30, and 4 for 31–40. That's the PSAI guideline. Food events and jobsites with paint, herbicide, or other contaminants need them close to the work.

Can I add an extra cleaning?

Yes. Extra service visits start at $85. Book them for busy jobsites, multi-day events, or summer heat. For festivals, the most requested slot is overnight between day one and day two, so the units are fresh when gates open.

Do you discount multiple units, nonprofits, or churches?

Yes. Orders of 3 or more units, nonprofit festivals, churches, and schools get multi-unit pricing. Tell us when you call and we'll itemize the savings on your quote. Repeat customers keep their account and pricing in our customer portal.

How far ahead should I book for a holiday weekend or big Galveston event?

Book 2–3 weeks ahead for Labor Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Mardi Gras, and the Lone Star Rally weekend. Those dates sell out first. In our call log, every caller who waited until the Thursday before Labor Day either paid a rush fee or got no unit.

Can you put a porta potty on the beach?

Sometimes, with permission. Beach events on Park Board beaches need a Park Board permit, and vehicles are restricted on the sand, so we usually set units at the nearest vehicle access point. East Beach has no indoor restrooms, which makes a rented unit the only option for guests.
