How many toilets does OSHA require on a construction site?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1 requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer employees; 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers for 20 or more; and 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers for 200 or more. Under temporary field conditions, at least one toilet must be available.
| Number of employees | Minimum number of facilities |
|---|---|
| 20 or less | 1 |
| 20 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers |
What's the difference between the OSHA minimum and what crews need?
The OSHA minimum is a legal floor; PSAI's working guideline is 1 unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week with weekly service. A 20-worker crew meets OSHA with 1 toilet, but that unit fills in about 2 days. Two units with weekly service, or one with twice-weekly service, keeps the site usable.
| Crew | OSHA minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 1 | 1, weekly service |
| 15 | 1 | 2, weekly |
| 20 | 1 | 2, weekly |
| 35 | 1 seat + 1 urinal | 4, weekly |
| 60 | 2 seats + 2 urinals | 6, weekly — or 3 with twice-weekly |

Does OSHA require handwashing stations on jobsites?
OSHA 1926.51(f) requires adequate washing facilities for workers applying paints, coatings, herbicides, insecticides, or other harmful contaminants, located near the work. Lavatories need running water, soap, and individual towels. Many general contractors add a handwashing station to every jobsite even when it isn't required.
See handwashing station specs and ratios.
Are there exceptions to the OSHA toilet rule?
Yes, one narrow exception: under 1926.51(c)(4), the toilet requirement doesn't apply to mobile crews with transportation readily available to nearby toilet facilities. Crews that work at a fixed site all day — roofing, framing, concrete, remodeling — still need a toilet on site.
Separate rules cover farms: OSHA 1928.110 requires 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility per 20 field workers, within a quarter-mile walk, for farms with 11 or more hand laborers.
What changes for jobsites in Galveston?
Galveston jobsites face three local issues: summer heat averaging 91–92°F in July and August, which speeds odor and calls for more service; storm season from June 1 to November 30, which means strapping units and pulling exposed ones; and raised homes, where units must sit where the truck can reach them.
A roofing contractor called after his first supplier never showed. His crew needed a unit for three days, that day. Same-day jobsite orders are possible on the island, but the rush fee is real — booking the day before a start date saves it.

How many toilets does OSHA require on a construction site?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1 requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers. For 20 to 199 workers, it's 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. For 200 or more, it's 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50. That's the legal minimum; we recommend 1 unit per 10 workers with weekly service.
I'm remodeling my house with no water. Do I need a contractor account?
No. Homeowners book the same 28-day construction rate as contractors, with weekly service included. Bathroom remodels, foundation work, and post-storm repairs are common reasons. We place it on your property so the crew never needs your house bathroom.
Do I have to commit to a long contract?
No. The minimum is one 28-day cycle. After that it renews cycle by cycle until you call for pickup. There's no long-term contract, and calling for pickup stops billing at the end of the current cycle.
Can I call for pickup when the job is done?
Yes. Most construction orders are set as "will-call" pickups. When the job wraps, call or text the date and the driver pulls the unit on the next route, usually within 1–2 business days. Billing stops at the end of that cycle.
Will a porta potty smell in Galveston's summer heat?
Heat speeds odor, and Galveston highs average 91–92°F in July and August. Shade, a vent facing the breeze, and twice-weekly service for busy units keep odor down. We add fresh deodorizer at every service and can schedule extra visits during heat waves.
Do you rent handwashing stations?
Yes. Our dual hand-wash station has two basins, a hands-free foot pump, a 22-gallon fresh-water tank, soap, and paper towels. The manufacturer rates it at nearly 300 hand washes per fill. It's a common add-on for food events and jobsites.
