Do I need a permit for porta potties at a Galveston event?
You need a City of Galveston special event permit for public events on city property, and a Galveston Park Board permit for events on Park Board beaches. Private parties on private property usually don't need one. Restrooms are part of the permit plan, so your unit count should match what you file.
When in doubt, ask the office before you sign a venue contract. Units placed in the public right-of-way need a separate License to Use from the city, which takes about 5–6 weeks.
What does the City of Galveston require?
The City of Galveston requires special event applications at least 75 days and no more than 180 days before the event. Fees for city services are due 15 days before, with a refundable $1,000 cleanup deposit. The city's guidelines recommend at least 1 chemical toilet per 250 people.
| Item | City of Galveston |
|---|---|
| Office | City Manager's Office — Special Events Coordinator |
| Lead time | 75–180 days before the event |
| Cleanup deposit | $1,000, refundable |
| City-service fees | Due 15 days before |
| Restroom guideline | 1 chemical toilet per 250 people |
Our recommendation vs. the minimum: the 1-per-250 guideline is a floor. A 2,000-person, 6-hour street festival meets it with 8 units, but the PSAI chart calls for 16 to keep lines short. Read how many porta potties you need.

What does the Galveston Park Board require for beach events?
The Galveston Park Board requires a permit for events on its beaches and parks. Above 500 attendees, plan 1 toilet per 500 attendees with 1 in 4 accessible. The site layout and fees are due 30 days before the event, with a refundable deposit of $500 to $1,500 depending on crowd size and $1 million liability insurance.
| Item | Park Board public events |
|---|---|
| Review time | Up to 10 business days |
| Site layout due | 30 days before |
| Fees due | 30 days before |
| Deposit | $500 (<1,000 people) · $1,000 (1,000–4,000) · $1,500 (4,000+) |
| Insurance | $1M per occurrence, naming Park Board and City |
| Restrooms | Over 500 attendees: 1 per 500, 1 in 4 ADA |
| Vehicles | Limited on the sand; one tow vehicle and trailer for vendors |
East Beach has no indoor restrooms, so every guest depends on rented units. We place units at the vehicle access point and coordinate with the Park Board events office.
What do nearby cities require?
Nearby cities set their own rules. Texas City and Alvin want applications 60 days ahead and ask for your toilet count. Seabrook requires permits for 90+ attendees, alcohol, or food trucks, filed 45–125 days ahead. Pasadena wants 45 days and your supplier's name. Manvel recommends 1 toilet per 50 people.
| City | Lead time | Restroom detail |
|---|---|---|
| Texas City | 60 days | Toilet count, vendor, ADA count |
| Alvin | 60 days; $25 | Toilet count on application |
| Seabrook | 45–125 days; $75 | Restrooms on site map; 90+ attendees triggers permit |
| Pasadena | 45 days–12 months | Name your supplier; restrooms on map |
| Manvel | 7–60 days by size | Recommends 1 toilet per 50 people |
| Kemah | Ask the city | Temporary conditional use permit |
| Sugar Land | 45 days (parks) | Non-Standard Park Reservation |
How do I put restrooms on my permit site plan?
Put restrooms on your permit site plan as clusters near entrances, food areas, and stages, with at least one accessible unit and a handwashing station in each cluster, plus a marked service-truck route. We send a drawn layout with your quote that you can attach to your city or Park Board application.
- Send us your site map and attendance by day.
- We place clusters and count units from the PSAI chart.
- Each cluster gets ≥5% accessible units and the PSAI handwashing ratio.
- We mark the truck route for overnight service.
- You attach our layout to your application.
Related questions
These questions come straight from real rental calls. Each answer starts with the short version, then the conditions that change it.
Do I need an ADA unit for my event?
For public events, plan on at least 5% of units in each cluster being accessible, and never fewer than one. That's how the ADA portable-unit rule is usually applied. Private parties only need one if a guest uses a wheelchair or walker. Confirm event rules with your permit office or venue.
Can you put a porta potty on the beach?
Sometimes, with permission. Beach events on Park Board beaches need a Park Board permit, and vehicles are restricted on the sand, so we usually set units at the nearest vehicle access point. East Beach has no indoor restrooms, which makes a rented unit the only option for guests.
Can the porta potty sit on the street in front of my house?
Plan on private property. The City of Galveston requires a "License to Use" for anything in the public right-of-way, and approval takes about 5–6 weeks. A driveway edge, side yard, or the back of your lot avoids that delay and keeps the unit off the curb.
How many porta potties does a 2,000-person festival need?
A 2,000-person festival needs 12 units for 4 hours and 16 units for 6 hours, from the PSAI special-events chart. Make at least 1 accessible, add 2 handwashing stations, and add an overnight service between festival days.
How far ahead should I book for a holiday weekend or big Galveston event?
Book 2–3 weeks ahead for Labor Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Mardi Gras, and the Lone Star Rally weekend. Those dates sell out first. In our call log, every caller who waited until the Thursday before Labor Day either paid a rush fee or got no unit.
Do you discount multiple units, nonprofits, or churches?
Yes. Orders of 3 or more units, nonprofit festivals, churches, and schools get multi-unit pricing. Tell us when you call and we'll itemize the savings on your quote. Repeat customers keep their account and pricing in our customer portal.
